Jammu, Feb 19: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah over the issue of establishing a National Law University in Jammu, alleging discrimination against the region.

Speaking to reporters, Sharma said the Chief Minister has the prerogative to establish an NLU campus in Jammu but has failed to do so. He claimed that instead of addressing the concerns of the people, the Chief Minister has relied on certain leaders in Jammu to defend his position, though he declined to name them.

The Leader of Opposition also targeted Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary, alleging that he has little to do with Jammu’s interests and accusing him of frequently shifting political affiliations to remain in power. Sharma remarked that the Deputy Chief Minister had changed parties multiple times in the past and would continue to do so if politically expedient.

Refuting allegations that protests in Jammu over the NLU issue were sponsored by the BJP, Sharma termed the charge baseless. He asserted that the demonstrations reflect genuine public sentiment and are not orchestrated by his party.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister had alleged that the protests in Jammu were being backed by the BJP, claiming that some students were found carrying placards prepared by the party. [KNT]
