Poonch, Jan 25: Police in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly posting objectionable and inflammatory content on social media, officials said.

A senior police officer told news agency Kashmir News Corner—(KNC) that the accused, identified as Onkar Singh (60), a resident of Kamsar area of Poonch city, had uploaded content that hurt public sentiments and had the potential to disturb communal harmony and public order.

Taking cognisance of the post, police acted swiftly and took the accused into custody. A case has been registered against him under relevant provisions of law and further investigation is underway, the officer said.

Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards any act aimed at disturbing communal harmony or spreading hatred through the misuse of social media platforms and warned that such activities would be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

The police also issued an advisory urging people to exercise restraint and responsibility while using social media and cautioned against sharing provocative, misleading or offensive content, which could invite legal action the officer said.

Members of the public have been asked to report any objectionable or provocative content to the nearest police station or through designated helpline numbers, the officer added.—(KNC)
