Kulgam, Nov 22: Hepatitis A outbreak has been reported in Churat village of Qazigund area in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, with at least nine children showing symptoms of jaundice, officials said on Saturday.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Kulgam, Dr. Showkat Ahmad Parray, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC said that complaints had been coming in from the area over the past two to three days regarding children developing symptoms indicative of jaundice.

“Some cases were reported by private practitioners and some by government health facilities. Our surveillance teams immediately started field visits and have so far identified around 7 to 9 symptomatic children,” he said.

Dr. Parray said the current situation appears to be a fever-related illness consistent with Hepatitis A, and precautionary measures have already been issued.

“We have instructed residents to ensure they drink only boiled water, maintain strict hand hygiene, and follow sanitation guidelines. Our teams are continuously monitoring the area, conducting door-to-door assessments, and spreading awareness to prevent further spread,” he added.

CMO appealed to the public to remain cautious and prioritize hygiene practices such as frequent handwashing and consuming boiled water only. Further monitoring and medical support are underway to contain the outbreak.
