Budgam, July 15: Residents of Pandit Colony, Chan Mohalla, Ustaad Colony and adjoining areas in Budgam on Wednesday staged a protest alleging that contaminated drinking water has been supplied to their localities for the past 15 days, prompting them to demand immediate intervention by the authorities.
The demonstration, led largely by women, was held near Budgam Chowk. Protesters briefly blocked traffic, demanding restoration of clean drinking water and immediate action by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department.
The protesters alleged that the water being supplied to their homes was polluted and unfit for consumption. They claimed the issue had persisted for around two weeks despite repeated representations to the concerned department.
The protesters said the continued supply of contaminated water had caused inconvenience to residents and raised concerns about possible health implications, particularly for children and elderly people.
They urged the PHE Department and the district administration to identify the source of contamination, restore the supply of potable drinking water without delay and ensure that such incidents do not recur.
The protesters warned that if the issue remains unresolved, they would intensify their agitation in the coming days. [KNT]
