Srinagar, April 18: The Fire and Emergency Department has sought action against an eatery in Lal Chowk after 19 LPG cylinders were recovered during a fire incident in the attic portion of the restaurant on Saturday morning.

The blaze broke out around 7 am in the attic of the “Eat Out” restaurant located in the busy commercial hub of Lal Chowk, prompting a swift response from firefighting teams.

The incident has raised concerns over safety compliance, particularly the storage of multiple gas cylinders in a confined attic space within a commercial building.

Deputy Director Fire and Emergency Services Aquib Hussain Mir said that storing combustible materials in such a manner is hazardous and could lead to serious consequences.

“It is dangerous to store and stock combustible substances as that could prove fatal. We found 19 gas cylinders at the site and have informed the concerned police station to take action,” he said.

He added that the department deployed a hydraulic system during the operation, which enabled firefighters to control and contain the blaze in a short span of time.

The attic portion of the restaurant sustained damage in the incident, while firefighters managed to save the rest of the five-storey building from being engulfed in flames.

Officials said timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining structures in the congested market area, averting a potentially larger disaster.

The department has formally alerted the local police for further investigation and necessary action regarding safety violations. [KNT]
