Srinagar, July 1 (GNS): The Southwest Monsoon has advanced into most parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, covering the entire region on Wednesday, a day later than its normal onset date of June 30, the weatherman said.

According to Meteorological department here, the monsoon’s arrival was accompanied by significant rainfall across parts of the Jammu region, with Samba recording the highest precipitation at 62.5 mm, followed by Jammu (35.8 mm), Kathua (23.8 mm) and Rajouri (19.6 mm) in 24 hours till 0830 hours today. Light rainfall was reported from other weather stations across J&K.

The minimum temperatures recorded also stayed normal across Kashmir Valley with Srinagar recording low of 23.3°C, 6.0°C above normal, while Qazigund recorded 21.7°C (above 6.0°C), Pahalgam 17.7°C (above 6.3°C), Kupwara 20.8°C (above 5.1°C), Kokernag 21.1°C (above 6.0°C) and Gulmarg 15.0°C (above 3.9°C). The minimum temperature settled at 23.3°C in Jammu, 22.8°C in Kathua, 24.0°C in Katra, 22.1°C in Banihal, 21.0°C in Batote and 18.9°C in Bhaderwah.

The MeT department said that weather conditions from July 1 to 4 are expected to remain generally cloudy, with one or two spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places. Heavy rainfall, brief intense showers, thunderstorms and gusty winds are likely at a few locations during this period, the MeT department said in a statement, as per GNS.

From July 5 to 8, the weather is expected to turn generally hot and humid, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers at scattered to many places, It said. Isolated parts of the Jammu division may continue to witness brief intense showers.

The MeT Centre has issued an advisory warning that heavy rainfall and intense showers over the next three days could trigger localized flash floods, landslides and mudslides at vulnerable locations in the Jammu division, Pir Panjal range, Chenab Valley and adjoining parts of South Kashmir.

It also warned of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and advised people to stay away from streams, nallahs and landslide-prone locations.

Travellers, tourists and transporters have been urged to plan their journeys accordingly and follow traffic advisories issued by the authorities. (GNS)
