Uri, Jan 27 (GNS): Bodies of two deceased persons remained stranded for almost an hour near the Nathu Singh Bridge in Uri on Tuesday after a stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was temporarily closed due to heavy landslides and shooting stones, officials said.

Reports reaching GNS said the deceased included a woman from Nambla who had died at a hospital in Srinagar and a man from Balkote area of Uri who passed away at his residence in Baramulla earlier in the day. The ambulances carrying the bodies were halted near the NS Bridge following the sudden closure of the highway caused by continuous landsliding.

Officials said the affected stretch was closed around 11 am as a precautionary measure and remained shut for over two hours. “After authorities pressed heavy machinery into service and cleared the debris, traffic was restored on the road,” they told GNS.

SHO Uri also reached the spot and assisted in facilitating the smooth passage of the ambulances. Following the clearance of the road, both bodies were taken towards their respective residences by ambulances from SDH Uri.

Authorities added that the stretch remains prone to frequent closures due to recurring landslides, while machinery under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) has also been deployed to clear link roads blocked due to heavy snowfall. (GNS)
