Srinagar, Feb 25 (GNS): Two Lashker-e-Toiba militants and a civilian were killed in Amshipora area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Friday, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

“Based on a specific input of police about the presence of (militants) in village Amshipora, Shopian, a joint operation was launched by (Police, 44RR and 14Bn CRPF) during the late night of 24/25-02-2022,” IGP said in a statement to GNS, adding, “After a cluster of houses were taken into cordon, following the drill civilians were evacuated to safety. Thereafter, house to house searches were started in the wee hours to locate the hiding militants”.

During the searches, he said, the militants came out and “resorted to indiscriminate firing”.

“In the indiscriminate firing of the militants one civilian namely Shakeel Ahmed Khan son of Abdul Rahim Khan of Amshipora got seriously wounded. The injured civilian while being evacuated for medical help succumbed to the injuries,” he said.

The fire by the militants, he said, was retaliated “effectively in which both militants were neutralized”.

He identified the militants as Muzamil Ahmad Mir son of Abdul Hameed Mir of Chatripora, Shopian and Shariq Ayoob son of Mohammad Ayoob Wagay of Bonpora, Amshipora, Shopian.

“(Militant) Muzamil was involved in several militant incidents. Both the militants belonged to LeT outfit,” he said. Later in a press statement, police said one AK-56 rifle, two AK Magazines, one Chinese Pistol, one Pistol Magazine and 26 AK rounds were recovered from the site of encounter.

He said Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. “People are requested to cooperate with Police till the area at encounter site is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials, if any.” (GNS)
