According to the new proposal, which is likely to come into effect from Monday, July 14, schools in urban areas will function from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM, while schools in rural areas will operate from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Sources said that an official order in this regard is expected soon and is likely to come into effect on Monday.

Speaking to media persons in Srinagar, Education Minister, as per news agency JKNS, said the Education Department acted after numerous calls, messages, and suggestions from the public regarding school functioning in view of weather-related concerns. “We received a large number of requests from parents and students urging changes in school hours instead of disrupting academic continuity,” she said.

Sakina Itoo said the department had earlier issued an advisory to gather public opinion before finalising the decision. “I had directed officials to take the matter to the public so we could get a clear picture of their concerns. Based on the response, the timing schedule has now been revised,” she said.

The Minister added that the government’s priority remains ensuring that students receive uninterrupted education. “We are committed to keeping our children on track academically, especially at a time when competitiveness is crucial,” she said.

She also assured that public concerns would continue to be addressed and that policies would be framed to maintain both academic goals and student well-being.

It may be noted that the decision not to extend summer vacations has received mixed responses, with some sections of the public expressing dissatisfaction. However, the department has said that academic continuity and public interest remain at the core of its policies. (JKNS)
