4 culverts damaged, 12 villages hit by drinking water crisis

Barman, July 23 (GNS): A cloudburst in the upper reaches of Mayan village in Boniyar on Thursday triggered flash floods, damaging key infrastructure and throwing normal life out of gear.

Officials told GNS that four culverts were washed away in the floods, disrupting road connectivity and slowing down restoration work. Residents of Mayan and nearby villages are facing severe difficulties due to the breakdown of electricity and drinking water supply.

Tehsildar Boniyar, Najbullah Shah, said restoration work has been started on a war footing. “We are hopeful that power and drinking water services will be restored by Friday, if the weather remains clear,” he said.

The Jal Shakti Department, Uri, in a public advisory said the cloudburst badly affected the Neela Nag water source. Raw water transmission pipelines were damaged, leading to water supply disruption in multiple areas.

According to the department, residents of Mayan, Kathal, Muqam Peeran, Braripora, Bijhama, Niloosa, Noorkhah, Gingle, Lachipora A & B, and Chandanwari are likely to face interruption until repairs are completed.

People have been advised to use water judiciously, boil drinking water before use, and cooperate with field staff. Authorities assured that repair work is underway to restore essential services at the earliest. (GNS)
