Administration cites patient safety, uninterrupted healthcare services and hospital discipline; MRs allowed to meet doctors only after working hours
Anantnag, August 15: Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag has imposed stringent restrictions on the entry and movement of Medical Representatives (MRs) within its clinical areas, barring them from entering Outpatient Departments (OPDs), wards and casualty sections during official duty hours.
The measure has been introduced by the college administration to ensure that patient-care areas remain free from unnecessary movement and interruptions, while maintaining discipline, clinical efficiency and uninterrupted medical services.
As per an order issued by the Principal, GMC Anantnag, the administration observed that Medical Representatives were entering and moving around various patient-care areas during working hours. The authorities also noted instances where some representatives were allegedly checking or examining patients’ prescriptions.
The administration has expressed concern that such activities could interfere with the normal functioning of the hospital and cause inconvenience to patients, attendants, doctors, nursing staff and other healthcare personnel.
Under the directions, Medical Representatives have been prohibited from approaching doctors or patients in OPDs, wards and casualty areas for promotional or professional purposes during duty hours.
The administration, however, clarified that representatives may meet the concerned doctors after the completion of their official duties, provided such meetings do not interfere with patient care or disturb the routine functioning of the hospital.
The restrictions will remain applicable across GMC Anantnag and its associated hospitals, effectively keeping pharmaceutical and other promotional activities away from designated patient-care areas during working hours.
The Principal has directed Heads of Departments, faculty members, consultants, resident doctors, outsourced security staff and other concerned officials to ensure strict implementation of the order.
The authorities have further made it clear that any violation of the directions will be viewed seriously and may invite disciplinary action under the applicable rules.
The administration said the primary objective of the decision is to ensure that OPDs, wards and emergency areas remain dedicated exclusively to patient treatment, diagnosis and clinical services, allowing healthcare professionals to discharge their duties without avoidable interruptions.
The move is also aimed at improving discipline and reducing congestion in busy hospital areas, particularly OPDs and casualty sections, where the movement of persons not directly involved in patient care can create inconvenience for patients and their attendants.
Hospital security personnel have accordingly been instructed to prevent unauthorised entry and promotional interactions by Medical Representatives in restricted clinical areas during duty hours.
The GMC Anantnag administration has emphasised that the decision is intended to protect patient interests, improve clinical efficiency and strengthen discipline across the institution and its associated healthcare facilities.
