Srinagar, Aug 9 (GNS): BJP Sarpanch and his wife, who was also Panch, were shot dead by two bike-borne militants in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday, police said

Officials said at around 1600 hours, militants barged inside the rented accommodation of BJP Sarpanch Ghulam Rasool Dar son of Ghulam Hassan Dar of Redwani Kulgam at Lalchowk Anantnag and fired indiscriminately from pistol.

In the incident, Dar and his wife Jawhara Begum received critical gunshot injuries and possibly died on the spot. Nevertheless, the duo was immediately shifted to GMC Anantnag, where both were declared brought dead on the arrival by the doctors.

Soon after the incident, IGP Kashmir, DIG SKR and SSP Anantnag reached at the spot.

“Although the deceased was provided a secured accommodation at snow cap hotel Kulgam and both stayed there for a short period, they had been continuously insisting to stay at their house at Anantnag Town and also submitted an undertaking in this regard,” a police spokesman said in a statement to GNS. “On their request they were allowed to stay at said house in Anantnag,” he said.

Dar, also president of Kisan Morcha BJP for Kulgam, was also provided with one PSO who however was found absent from duty at the time of incident. “The PSO has been placed under suspension,” the spokesman said.

Police, he said, has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law.

“IGP Kashmir said that two bike (borne militants) of LeT outfit were involved in this incident,” the spokesman said, adding, “Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this (incident).”  (GNS)
