Srinagar, Oct 29: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday accused Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by announcing the commencement of National Law University (NLU) classes in Ompora, Budgam, a constituency currently under by-election.
Leader of Opposition and senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma told reporters outside the Assembly as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, that the Chief Minister’s statement inside the House was a direct breach of election guidelines and amounted to misuse of office.
“On the floor of the House, Omar Abdullah Sahib announced the opening of Law University classes in Budgam, where the MCC is in force. This is a clear violation of election norms. He should resign immediately on moral grounds,” Sharma said, as per the news agency Kashmir News Corner (KNC).
He said the BJP would approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) to seek action against the Chief Minister if he fails to step down. “If the Chief Minister does not resign, we will file an official complaint with the ECI and demand strict proceedings for the MCC breach,” he added.
Sharma questioned the timing and legality of the announcement, stating that no new policy or development decision can be made when the MCC is in effect. “The Chief Minister has no right to take such decisions when the Model Code of Conduct is operational. He cannot override the directions of the Election Commission,” Sharma said.
He further alleged that the Chief Minister has repeatedly challenged institutional norms and crossed ethical boundaries. “This act reflects disregard for democratic principles. If he believes in accountability, he should resign voluntarily. Otherwise, we will ensure the Election Commission takes note,” the BJP leader said.
