New Delhi, August 15:(KNC)The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (DME) of the South East Central Railway (SECR), Bhilai, in connection with an alleged bribery case.

According to a press release issued by the CBI, the accused officer, an Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) officer, allegedly demanded an undue advantage of ₹2 lakh from a complainant for clearing his pending bills. Following negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept ₹1 lakh as the bribe amount.

The CBI registered the case on August 13, 2026, following the allegations against the senior railway officer.

As part of the investigation, the CBI laid a trap on August 13 and allegedly caught the accused while accepting ₹50,000, which was stated to be part payment of the demanded bribe. The amount was allegedly collected from the complainant through a tout acting on the instructions of the accused officer.

Following the trap operation, the CBI conducted searches at the residential and office premises linked to the accused in Raipur and Bhilai.

During the searches, investigators reportedly recovered cash amounting to approximately ₹77 lakh and jewellery valued at around ₹14 lakh.

The accused Senior DME, SECR, Bhilai, along with the alleged tout, was arrested on August 14, 2026. Both accused were subsequently produced before the competent court, which granted four days of police custody.

The CBI said that further investigation in the case is underway.

The agency is examining the alleged bribery transaction as well as the source and circumstances surrounding the substantial cash and jewellery recovered during the searches.

The investigation is continuing.(KNC)
