AHMEDABAD, AUGUST 23: A Special CBI Court in Ahmedabad has sentenced an Income Tax Officer to three years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹20,000 in a bribery case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

According to a press release issued by the CBI, the court on August 21, 2026, convicted and sentenced Jarnail B. Singh, Income Tax Officer (OSD), Office of the Joint/Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Pratyakshkar Bhavan, Ahmedabad, in connection with the bribery case.

The case dates back to February 22, 2013, when the CBI registered the case following allegations that the accused Income Tax Officer had demanded an illegal gratification of ₹10,000 from the complainant.

The bribe was allegedly sought for issuing a certificate under Sections 11 and 80G of the Income Tax Act, relating to exemption for “Shrilekha Vividhlaxi Charitable Trust.”

Following receipt of the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught the accused red-handed while accepting ₹10,000 from the complainant as illegal gratification, the agency said.

The accused was arrested on February 22, 2013, while the CBI subsequently completed its investigation and filed the chargesheet before the competent court on October 31, 2013.

After completion of the trial and examination of the evidence presented before it, the CBI Court, Ahmedabad, convicted the accused on August 21, 2026, and awarded him three years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹20,000.

The conviction marks the culmination of a case that remained pending for more than 13 years since the registration of the FIR in 2013.

The CBI, in its official press release, stated that the court passed the conviction and sentence after trial in the bribery case. (KNC)
