Red Notice Issued in July 2026; Accused Traced, Arrested and Brought Back to India Within Two Months
New Delhi, September 29: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has successfully secured the deportation of Sandeep Mistry, a Red Notice subject wanted in connection with the Nirav Modi Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India.
According to a press release issued by the CBI, Mistry was wanted in a bank fraud case registered by the CBI, BSFB, Mumbai, relating to alleged fictitious international trade transactions.
The agency said that Mistry allegedly acted as a key link between various entities and was involved in overseeing their day-to-day operations. He allegedly issued instructions through clandestine, self-deleting communication platforms to conceal evidence.
The CBI further alleged that Mistry facilitated the preparation of forged import-export documents to portray fictitious trade in diamonds, gold and pearl jewellery.
The agency also alleged that Mistry, along with other accused persons, coerced dummy directors of foreign companies by threatening them with arrest, relocating them, seizing their electronic devices and compelling them to sign documents falsely portraying them as genuine owners of the companies.
According to the CBI, Mistry also participated in the alleged siphoning of funds from the bank accounts of dummy companies in the UAE. The charge-sheet in the case has already been filed before the competent court.
Red Corner Notice Issued in July
At the request of the CBI, an INTERPOL Red Notice was published against Mistry in July 2026 through INTERPOL channels.
Subsequently, he was geo-located and arrested by UAE authorities, following which the deportation process was initiated.
The CBI said the accused was successfully traced, apprehended and brought back to India within approximately two months of publication of the Red Notice, following coordination among the concerned agencies.
Brought to Mumbai, Sent to Jail Custody
Mistry arrived in Mumbai at around 11:55 PM on September 28, 2026, where he was taken into custody by officers of the CBI, BSFB, Mumbai.
He was subsequently produced before the competent court and sent to jail custody, the agency said.
CBI Highlights INTERPOL Coordination
The CBI, which functions as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, coordinates with law-enforcement agencies across the country through BHARATPOL for assistance through INTERPOL channels.
The agency said that more than 175 wanted criminals have been successfully brought back to India in recent years through coordination via INTERPOL channels.(KNC)
