New Delhi, Aug 19: Doctors registered with a State Medical Council and allotted a Unique Identification Number on the National Medical Register can practise across States and Union Territories without going through a fresh registration process in every state, under the National Medical Commission’s new registration framework.

The reform is aimed at simplifying the movement of registered medical practitioners across the country and reducing the administrative burden associated with separate state-level registration requirements.

The National Medical Commission’s framework provides for a National Medical Register containing the names and particulars of licensed and registered medical practitioners enrolled in State Medical Registers and entitled to practise medicine in India.

The NMC’s registration regulations also provide for a mechanism allowing a registered medical practitioner to practise in another state through the NMC’s registration system, with the concerned State Medical Council notified and given a prescribed period to process the transfer.

Welcoming the development, Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, Health Activist and Co-Convenor, IMA JDN J&K, described it as a significant step towards a more unified medical registration system.

He said the reform would reduce unnecessary administrative hurdles for doctors and make it easier for medical professionals to move between different parts of the country for professional work

The change is expected to be particularly relevant for doctors who relocate for employment, pursue professional opportunities in another State or Union Territory, or serve in areas where their services are required.

The National Medical Commission maintains the National Medical Register alongside the State Medical Council registration framework, with professional conduct and disciplinary matters continuing to involve the relevant regulatory authorities. [KNT]
