Ramban, Feb 10: One person was killed and two others were injured after an electric auto rickshaw met with a serious accident on the Nachlana Khari road in Banihal sub division of Ramban district on Tuesday evening, officials said.
The accident occurred near Nachilana when the electric auto, travelling from Khari towards Banihal, went out of control and plunged into a deep ravine estimated to be around 200 feet deep. The impact left all occupants trapped in the gorge.
Immediately after the mishap, a joint rescue operation was launched by locals, police, Army personnel from the nearby 23 Rashtriya Rifles camp, and volunteers of the Quick Response Team Khari. The injured were evacuated from the ravine after strenuous efforts and shifted for medical assistance.
Officials said the injured were initially provided emergency care at the Army Camp Nachilana before being taken to Sub District Hospital Banihal. Given the seriousness of their condition, all were referred to Government Medical College Anantnag for specialised treatment.
One of the injured, Ghulam Hassan Sohil, son of Lasu Sohil, aged about 60 years and an inhabitant of Zanchous Chaknarwah area of Banihal, succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to GMC Anantnag. He had suffered a critical head injury in the accident.
The other injured include Fatima Begum, wife of Ghulam Hassan Sohil, aged about 57 years, who sustained multiple injuries and fractures, and Mohd Akram, son of Abdul Hamid, aged about 32 years, the driver of the vehicle and an inhabitant of Sila Ganote in Ramban district. Both are undergoing treatment at GMC Anantnag.
Police have taken cognizance of the incident and initiated further investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. [KNT]
