GANDERBAL, September 7:The bodies of a young boy and a girl were recovered from a power canal in the Thune area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district following an extensive search operation, officials said on Monday.
The incident reportedly occurred after the two were seen entering or jumping into the canal, following which a rescue operation was immediately launched.
The deceased boy has been identified as Irshad Ahmad Kahi, son of Mohammad Sharif Kahi, a resident of Thune. The identity of the girl has not been disclosed.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, personnel from Kangan Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), along with local volunteers and rescuers, mobilised teams to search the canal and adjoining areas.
The rescue teams conducted a sustained search despite challenging conditions and eventually traced and retrieved the bodies from the water channel.
Police have taken cognisance of the matter and initiated proceedings to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
