Srinagar, Sep 02: The United States has launched fresh strikes against targets belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), sharply escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, reported multiple international media houses.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces began striking IRGC targets in Iran, citing recent attempted attacks by the Guards against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American service members deployed in the region.
Reports from Iranian state media indicated explosions in several areas of southern Iran, including Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, Konarak, Jask and Sirik. The full extent of damage and casualties was not immediately clear.
US President Donald Trump subsequently warned Tehran against retaliating, saying Iran would face a significantly more severe US response if it struck back. In a statement on social media, Trump described the latest American action as a response to Iran’s alleged attempts to place mines in the Strait of Hormuz and its missile attack on a US military base in Jordan.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, meanwhile, vowed retaliation. IRGC spokesperson Brigadier General Hossein Mohebi warned that the United States would “regret” the fresh attacks and said severe punishment awaited the aggressors.
