Srinagar/Ganderbal, Sept 27: Drinking water supply is likely to remain affected in several major parts of Srinagar city and Ganderbal district over the next two days following a significant reduction in water discharge in the Sindh Extension (SE) Canal.
The Water Works Division Srinagar has issued a public notice stating that potable water supply in major parts of Srinagar city and adjoining areas is likely to remain affected on September 27 and 28 due to a sudden reduction in discharge in the S.P. Canal by the PDC authorities.
According to the department, the reduced discharge has impacted the SE Canal, consequently affecting the availability of raw water to the Alusteng and Rangil Water Treatment Plants.
Several areas of Srinagar, including Zakoora, Gulab Bagh, Alusteng, Khonmoh, Habak, Naseem Bagh, Busserbugh, Malla Bagh, Pandach, Buchpora, Soura, Anchar, Bohloochpora, Zoonimar, Noushera, Bagh-i-Ali Mardan Khan, Zadibal, Hawal, Alamgari Bazar, Rajouri Kadal, Nallahmar, Nawabazar, Nowhatta, Lal Bazar, Hazratbal, Sadribal, Nigeen, Saida Kadal, Rainawari, Khanyar, Nowpora, Ganpatyar, Habba Kadal, Baghwanpora, Basant Bagh, Chota Bazar, Karan Nagar, Chattabal, Kawdara, Eidgah, Mahragunj, Zaina Kadal, Saidpora, Firdous Abad, parts of Batamaloo and Qamarwari are expected to face disruption or reduced water supply.
Meanwhile, the Jal Shakti (PHE) Division Ganderbal has also issued an advisory regarding temporary disruption of drinking water supply in several areas following a possible breach in the Sindh Extension Canal.
The department said the reported breach has resulted in a significant reduction in water discharge, due to which water supply from dependent treatment facilities will remain temporarily suspended or severely affected until repair works are completed.
The affected areas in Ganderbal include Ganderbal town, Sherpathri Block comprising Chundina, Shalbugh and adjoining areas, Dagpora, Gadoora, Kujar, Tulmulla, Dangerpora, Lar, Larson, Dumbkadel and adjoining habitations, besides Benhama, Wayil, Nunner, Babosipora, Sehpora/Serch, Baderkund, Arch, Nagbal, Rangil, Darind, Malshahi Bagh and adjoining areas.
Both departments have appealed to residents to conserve water and use stored water judiciously during the affected period.
The Ganderbal division has also stated that emergency tanker services are available for areas facing water scarcity.
Residents of Srinagar requiring assistance regarding water shortages have been advised to contact the PHE Provincial Control Room, which remains functional round the clock.

The departments have expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to the public and said restoration of normal water supply will depend on completion of the necessary repair and restoration works.(KNC)
