Srinagar, May 29: (GNS) The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Corporators have called off their strike after Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, P K Pole visited and assured them of an enquiry within seven days.
Some sixty corporators led by Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu were on hunger strike since Thursday last inside the Corporation’s premises, rallying against Joint Commissioner (Planning)– accusing him of corruption and seeking his immediate removal.
The Divisional Commissioner Pole visited the protesting corporators at SMC on behalf of newly appointed Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta. On assurance that an enquiry will be conducted within seven days, the protesting corporators called off their stir and dispersed peacefully from the venue.
Saying that ‘justice will be done’, Pole while talking to media persons, as per GNS, said that the pen ending issues will be looked into so that no injustice is meted to anyone. “I have asked them to call off the strike and honorable Mayor, Deputy Mayor and counselors have all agreed upon it and called off the strike”, Pole said.
Meanwhile Mayor Junaid Azeem Matto taking to micro-blogging site Twitter wrote “Div Comm Kashmir, Mr. Pole visited SMC on behalf of Chief Secretary J&K and assured us the issues of the people we have raised would be addressed fairly and expeditiously.”
“As we end our protest, I extend my humble gratitude to all fellow Corporators for being so resolute”, he said.
In an earlier tweet, the Mayor wrote, “In a Special Session of the General Council of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) – a 3/4th majority of the Corporation unanimously passed a resolution seeking the removal of incumbent Joint Commissioner (Planning) and his replacement – as deemed fit by the Government (sic.)”.
