Jammu, Aug 8: The Shri Amarnath Yatra was suspended from Jammu on Saturday as persistent rain and inclement weather conditions in Ramban district and parts of Kashmir raised concerns over the safety of pilgrims travelling along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and other Yatra routes.

No fresh convoy of pilgrims was allowed to leave the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu as a precautionary measure, with authorities closely monitoring weather and road conditions before deciding on the resumption of movement.

The suspension has been ordered amid rainfall and the possibility of landslides, shooting stones and other disruptions along the highway and Yatra routes, officials said.

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has remained vulnerable to weather-related disruptions at several stretches, particularly in the Ramban sector, where rainfall can trigger landslides and shooting stones, posing risks to vehicular movement.

Authorities are assessing the situation on the ground and will take a decision on allowing the next batch of pilgrims to proceed after reviewing the weather and road conditions.

The precautionary suspension is aimed at preventing pilgrims from being exposed to hazardous conditions along the route amid the prevailing weather. [KNT]
