June 27: Acting tough against social crimes, J&K Police have arrested five gamblers in Shopian and seized stake money and playing cards..
Acting on a reliable information regarding gambling activities at Batamuran, a police party conducted a raid at a tin shed belonging to Nisar Ahmad Sheikh son of Shameem Ahmad at Batamuran under the jurisdiction Police Post Berthipora. During the raid, four persons were apprehended while indulging in gambling. The apprehended individuals have been identified as Tariq Ahmad Dar son of Ab. Rehman resident of Batapora, Shopian (Farmer), Anayatullah Dar son of Gul Mohammad resident of Nully Poshwari (Xray technician in Classic Institute Hyderpora Srinagar), Yasir Ahmad Sheikh son of Wali Mohammad resident of Trenz, Shopian (Employee in Rural Development Department Srinagar) and Sajad Ahmad Wagay son of Gh. Mohiuddin resident of Batamuran (Bakery Shop in Pulwama).
During the operation, stake money amounting to ₹23,580/- along with deck of playing cards were recovered and seized from the spot. Moreover, owner of the tin shed Nisar Ahmad Sheikh son of Shameem Ahmad Sheikh resident of Batamuran also arrested.
Accordingly, Case FIR No. 66/2026 under the relevant provisions of the Gambling Act has been registered at Police Station Keller and further investigation has been taken up.
Police reiterates its commitment to maintaining public order and urges citizens to cooperate with the police by reporting any illegal activities in their surroundings.
