Srinagar, Oct 9: Dr Manzoor Ahmad Mir, a breast cancer researcher at the University of Kashmir, has been featured in the list of the world’s top two per cent scientists associated with Stanford University, USA, for the fourth consecutive year, marking another international recognition for research emerging from Jammu and Kashmir.

Dr Mir, who serves in the Department of Bioresources at the University of Kashmir and as an adjunct professor at the Indian Institute of Sustainability, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad, has been included in the Health Sciences category for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, according to a press release issued on Thursday.

His research focuses on breast cancer drug repurposing, the molecular mechanisms behind cancer development and progression, metastasis and drug resistance. His work aims to improve scientific understanding of cancer and explore potential therapeutic strategies through interdisciplinary research.

According to the release, Dr Mir has published more than 100 research papers, with a cumulative journal impact factor exceeding 750, an h-index of 40 and an i10-index of 118. His publications have received more than 4,900 citations over the past five years.

Alongside his research work, he has authored 22 books and 85 book chapters published by international publishers, including Elsevier, Taylor & Francis and Springer Nature. He has also developed four online courses for the SWAYAM platform covering Immunology, Endocrinology, Human Genetics and Human Population Genetics, which have reportedly reached more than 20,000 students worldwide over seven years.

Dr Mir completed his PhD through Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and the CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh, after earning a master’s degree in Life Sciences with a gold medal. He also qualified the CSIR Junior Research Fellowship and National Eligibility Test four times.

His recognitions include the Best Cancer Researcher Award at Kashmir Expo-2022, presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Teacher Associateship Research Excellence Award from the Science and Engineering Research Board in 2019. In 2026, he received the Breast Cancer Awareness and Care Excellence Award at the seventh Cancer Summit Awards in New Delhi.

The release states that Dr Mir has completed six externally funded research projects and is currently leading two projects supported by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation under the Department of Science and Technology.

He has guided eight PhD scholars, while five doctoral researchers are currently working under his supervision. He has also mentored 60 master’s students through their research dissertations and contributed to science outreach programmes, academic conferences and research training.

Dr Mir previously served as coordinator and head of the Department of Bioresources from 2019 to 2025 and was the first nodal officer and coordinator of the Kupwara University Campus. He is also associated with several international scientific organizations, including the American Association for Cancer Research and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

His continued inclusion in the international list highlights his research output, academic mentoring and work in breast cancer studies, according to the press release. [KNT]
