Kokernag, Aug 10: Kokernag in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has recorded a tourist footfall of around 6.12 lakh since March, with visitors arriving from different parts of the country and abroad, giving a significant boost to local businesses and livelihoods.
The sharp increase in tourist arrivals has brought greater activity to the popular destination, benefiting hotels, restaurants, transport operators, shopkeepers, guides and other people whose livelihoods are linked directly or indirectly to tourism.
Local business owners said the sustained flow of visitors has created a positive economic impact and provided opportunities for people who depend on the tourism sector for their income.
“The increase in visitors has definitely helped local businesses. More tourists means more customers for shopkeepers, restaurants and transport operators, and this benefits many families,” locals said.
Another resident said the growing popularity of Kokernag could create long-term employment opportunities if the tourism infrastructure is developed in a planned manner.
“We want Kokernag to attract tourists throughout the year. If the administration improves facilities and connectivity while protecting the natural beauty of the area, tourism can become a major source of employment for local youth,” the resident said.
The tourism surge has also strengthened Kokernag’s profile as an emerging destination in south Kashmir, attracting visitors beyond the traditional tourist circuits.
Locals, however, said the growing footfall should be accompanied by better civic amenities, cleanliness, parking facilities and preservation of the area’s natural environment.
They said sustainable development would be crucial to ensuring that the increasing popularity of Kokernag translates into lasting economic benefits without putting excessive pressure on its natural surroundings.
The reported footfall of 6.12 lakh since March marks a significant phase in Kokernag’s tourism growth and reflects increasing interest in the destination among domestic and international visitors. [KNT]
