Srinagar, May 12: The National Testing Agency (NTA), with the approval of the Government of India, has cancelled the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2026 and decided to conduct a fresh examination.

The decision follows mounting scrutiny over alleged irregularities reported in several states after the exam was conducted on May 3, 2026, for nearly 22 lakh candidates across the country. The controversy escalated after reports of suspected question paper circulation and matching questions from external “guess papers” began surfacing during preliminary investigations.

According to reports, central agencies were alerted after discrepancies were highlighted in question patterns and external material allegedly linked to portions of the exam paper. Multiple detentions have been reported in connection with the probe, while investigation teams in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and other states are examining possible network-based dissemination of exam content.

The NTA stated that the examination was conducted under strict security protocols, including biometric verification, AI-based surveillance systems and controlled distribution of question papers. However, it added that the integrity concerns raised during post-exam analysis necessitated cancellation as a precautionary measure.

Notably, the NEET UG is currently India’s primary entrance examination for undergraduate medical courses including MBBS and BDS admissions. The cancellation is expected to impact admission timelines across medical colleges, with counselling schedules likely to be revised once fresh exam dates are announced.

Further details regarding the revised schedule and application process for the re-conducted examination are expected from the NTA in the coming days.
