Says institute’s NIRF ranking improved from 82nd in 2023 to 73rd in 2025

Srinagar: The Union Ministry of Education has informed the Lok Sabha that a regular Director has recently been appointed at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar, while the functions of Registrar have been assigned to a senior faculty member of the institute.

Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Dr Sukanta Majumdar, stated this in a written reply to Lok Sabha raised by National Conference MP Mian Altaf Ahmad regarding the administrative functioning of key posts at NIT Srinagar.

As per the reply, accessed by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), NIT Srinagar is an ‘Institute of national importance’ governed by the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007 and the Statutes framed under the Act.

The Ministry said the Act and Statutes define various authorities for managing the administrative and academic affairs of the institute, imparting instructions and maintaining discipline.

The Ministry stated that, in accordance with the Statutes of NITs, the Board of Governors, the apex decision-making body of NIT Srinagar, had assigned the functions of Registrar to one of the senior faculty members of the institute.

It further said that the Ministry, with the approval of the Visitor of the NITs, has recently appointed a regular Director at NIT Srinagar in accordance with Section 17 of the NITSER Act, 2007.

On the institute’s academic performance, the Ministry said NIT Srinagar has shown substantial improvement in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings over the last three years.

According to the reply, NIT Srinagar improved from 82nd position in 2023 to 79th in 2024 and further to 73rd in 2025.

The Ministry said the positive trend highlights the institute’s strategic focus on upgrading core educational metrics, strengthening research output and improving student outcomes.

The NIRF, launched by the Ministry of Education in September 2015, ranks higher education institutions annually across 11 categories based on parameters including teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity, and perception.

The reply was in response to questions on reports regarding administrative challenges and the functioning of key posts at NIT Srinagar, including the Registrar, and the steps taken to ensure administrative continuity and accountability in academic and financial decision-making at the institute—(KNO)
