Anantnag, Jul 29: Amid unrelenting rains and strong winds throughout the day on Wednesday, many residential houses received damage even as trees were uprooted at various places across south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Reports reaching Kashmir Glory said that the locals were alarmed after hearing the loud noise during the night hours. The noise only grew louder with each passing moment as rains coupled with heavy winds wreaked havoc to trees and many residential houses.
The heavy rains continued for the day, worsening the situation and leaving less scope for the locals to prevent the belongings from getting damaged in the weather fury.
The Tehsildar Bijbehara visited to take an on ground assessment of the affected areas. Talking to Kashmir Glory, the revenue officer said that he visited a spot at Pazalpora Bijbehara where four popular trees had fallen on Old National Highway, adding the trees were lifted with assistance from the R & B Department and the road made through for traffic.
We went to Wopzan village after that where we were informed about the narrow escape of two nomadic families as several popular trees were uprooted by the heavy winds, he said adding that however the families collectively lost some ten goats in the incident.
We during the visit went to other affected villages including Katu, Gatkipora, Aswara, Kanalwan, Kandi Pora, Gori, Sotkipora where several residential houses and cow sheds had received damaged, he said adding that there also has been damage to at least twenty houses in ThajiWar Bijbehara.
He said that the nomadic families are being shifted to safer zones.
The revenue officer in the meantime requested the general public to axe the non-fruit bearing trees in proximity to the residential houses, saying that these trees result in damage to life and property in many cases.
“People should avoid staying in vulnerable structures, stay indoors, keep the windows and doors closed and avoid travel if possible, avoid taking shelter under trees; not to lie or lean on concrete floors”, he further advised.
