Kulgam, July 28: Residents of Khargund and adjoining areas on Tuesday expressed serious concern over the illegal dumping of garbage along the Khargund–Brinal road in Devsar area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district, alleging that the unattended waste has become a breeding ground for foul smell and attracts stray dogs, posing a threat to commuters as well as local inhabitants.

The residents said heaps of mixed waste have been lying on the roadside for several days, creating an unhygienic atmosphere and affecting the daily movement of pedestrians and motorists. They feared that if the garbage is not removed promptly, it could lead to the spread of diseases, particularly during the ongoing summer season.

“The garbage dumped here attracts stray dogs throughout the day. Children, elderly people and pedestrians face difficulties while passing through the area. Besides the foul smell, it also poses serious health and safety risks. We appeal to the authorities to stop such illegal dumping permanently,” said a group of local residents.

They urged the Rural Development Department and local administration to identify those responsible for dumping waste indiscriminately and to ensure regular sanitation measures to prevent the recurrence of the problem.

When contacted, Block Development Officer (BDO) Devsar, said the matter has been taken seriously and necessary directions have already been issued.

“The garbage will be removed within hours. We will also ensure that such incidents do not occur in future by taking appropriate preventive measures,” the BDO said (KNC).
