Srinagar, Aug 30 (GNS): Three local Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in a gunfight in Shopian district of shopian district on Tuesday, police said.

“Acting on specific information generated by Shopian Police regarding the presence of (militants) in village Hushangpora Nagbal area of Shopian, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police, Army’s 44RR and CRPF’s 178Bn in the area,” a police spokesperson said in a statement to GNS.

During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated “effectively,” leading to an encounter, he said.

In the ensuing encounter, he said, three local militants of LeT were killed and include Danish Khursheed Bhat son of Khursheed Ahmad Bhat of Ladi Imamsahib, Tanveer Ahmad Wani son of Bashir Ahmad Wani of Amarbugh Imamsahib and Towseef Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Nabi Bhat resident of Chermarag, the spokesperson said.

“As per police records, all of them were categorized (militants) and involved in several cases including attacks on Police/security forces and civilian atrocities,” he said, adding, “It is pertinent to mention that the Danish and Tanveer who were active since Aug-2021, were trying to revive the (militant) folds by recruiting and motivating the gullible youth to join (militant) folds,” he said, adding, “Moreover, Danish Khursheed had earlier escaped from several encounters.”

He said “incriminating materials, arms & ammunition” were recovered from the site of encounter. (GNS)
