Militant’s Body Found, 4 Days After Budgam Gunfight

Srinagar, Sept 11 (GNS): Body of a militant was recovered late last night from Check Kawoosa after four days of searches following a brief gunfight in the area in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district, officials said on Friday.

“The body was recovered at Sukhnag Nala. The militant was injured during the encounter on September 7 after sustaining bullet injuries he had jumped into the water body in order to escape,” a police officer told GNS.

After the militant jumped, the officer said, a search operation was launched by Police, army’s 2 RR and 44 CRPF in the area. “The services of Marine Commandos and river police were also pressed into service and the search operation continued for four days,” the officer said.

The militant has been identified as Aqib Lone of Aglar Shopian who as per the police officer was affiliated with LeT.

“One hand grenade, a Pistol, an AK magazine, AK rounds, two mobile phones, a knife and other materials were also recovered,” the officer said. 

“All the recovered incriminating materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe his complicity in other militant related incidents,” the officer said.

A police spokesman here said that keeping in view the prevailing pandemic due to COVID-19 and to ensure the safety of people from inherent risk of contracting the infection, the body of the militant shall be sent to Baramulla for burial after completion of all medico-legal formalities. He said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered investigation has been initiated.

The encounter had ensued on September 7 after a joint team of police, 02 RR of army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation amid inputs about the presence of militants. Since then the searches were continuing. (GNS)
