Uri, Jan 23 (GNS): Heavy and continuous snowfall across Uri and Boniyar divisions has caused widespread disruption to normal life, resulting in damage to several residential structures, educational infrastructure, and horticulture in the region.
Reports reaching GNS said that the snowfall has led to large-scale damage to fruit-bearing trees in several areas, dealing a significant blow to local farmers and horticulturists.
Five residential houses, and a cowshed, were also damaged during the inclement weather. Among the affected houses two belonged to Mohd Shareef, son of Juma Chachi, a resident of Garkote, and Zaheer Abbas Kakroo of Nambla, Uri, leaving the families distressed amid harsh winter conditions.
In another incident, a walnut tree fell on Sun Light Model School in Nambla, causing damage to the private school building.
Essential services have been severely affected since last evening, with power and water supply disrupted in multiple localities. Road connectivity also suffered, as the Uri-Baramulla National Highway was blocked at several points due to landslides, though it was cleared multiple times by road maintenance agencies.
Residents have urged the concerned departments to expedite restoration work and ensure immediate relief to the affected families.
Meanwhile, authorities said that a detailed assessment of the damage is underway, and efforts are being made to clear roads and restore essential services at the earliest. (GNS)
