Illicit Drug Shipment Busted In Sopore; Accused Arrested From Courier Office: Police

Srinagar, December 26(GNS): Police on Friday said that it in Sopore intercepted an illicit drug consignment and arrested an accused during a coordinated operation at DTDC Courier Service, New Colony Sopore.

In a handout to GNS, the police said that the Sopore Police received specific and reliable information that an unknown person was likely to receive a parcel containing illicit drugs from a courier service. Acting promptly on the input, FIR No. 281/2025 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Sopore, and investigation was set into motion.

During the course of investigation, a police team, along with SDPO Sopore, SHO Sopore, Drug Inspector, and an Executive Magistrate, reached the courier office. One individual identified as Tahir Tariq Sheikh son of Tariq Ahmad Sheikh resident of Seelu, Sopore was apprehended on the spot while receiving the suspected parcel.

The parcel was opened on-site in the presence of the Executive Magistrate, Drug Inspector, and FSL Team Sopore. Upon examination, banned drugs containing 2000 tablets of Alprazolam, 200 tablets of Pregabalin and other pharmaceutical drugs were recovered.

The accused was arrested on the spot, and the recovered substances were seized as per legal procedure. Preliminary investigation indicates that the consignment had been ordered online from Chandigarh.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain forward and backward linkages and to identify the wider network involved.

J&K Police reiterate their firm commitment to maintaining zero tolerance against drug trafficking and continue sustained efforts to prevent the spread of narcotics and psychotropic substances in the region, reads the statement.(GNS)
